Cyprus: Should we open the boarders to the Turkish sector in the North?

Lizzy asked:
I would love Cyprus to be open to the Greeks so they could reclaim their property and businesses in the north but I don’t think it would work as a lot of their land has been sold off. All Turkish land in the South is still avaiable to the previous owners. Some of it has been used as car parks but not built on.

Looks like there is still a problem….move on
That is not quite so… a great deal of land owned by Turkish Cypriots pre 1974 has been built on in Southern Cyprus…one farmer’s land is mostly underneath Larnaca airport…there have been injustices on both sides.
SURE NOT! WE TURKS NOTHING TO DO IN THE SOUTH. WE DONT ALLOW SOUTHERN CYPRIOT COMMERCIAL INTERESTS IN TURKEY SO I GUESS YOU SHOULDNT LET TURKS TO GET IN. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PLACES FOR TURKS TO GO AND LOTS OF COUNTRIES FOR CYPRIOTS TO INVITE.
I honestly dont want Turks to go to south. We in 2004 in North Cyprus made an election and gave a hand to the south. And southern part rejected it. Its over for now. I guess untill southern Cypriots need some time to prepare themselves to that. We Turks and Southern Cypriots need time for that. Otherwise unpleasant situations happens.
I believe the time and developings solves the problem but its not the right time. At least it seems it is not the right time for southern Cypriots.
To be quite honest, I don’t really care.
Looks like the South worked very hard to get to EU and they deserve to enjoy it them self’s with out the freeloaders from the north ! they Turks and let them be Turks ! Not European Subjects !
Who is “we”?
If, after all that’s said and done, the North really believes the South would embrace them like long lost brothers, by all means, do.
But before opening anything to anyone, remember that the South want the North as a minority, not equal partners, and then check out the conditions the Turkish minority in Greece live in.
It is your land and your life, after all. The South can open borders and the North can join in gleefully. The young didn’t live the strife that caused this condition.
The property may being sold off but it’s sold by an illegal authority and that’s why the right owners are taking this to the European Court.
The property of the Turkish Cypriots in South Cyprus cannot be sold. The property of them that has been used by the state is being paid back to them.
Before 1974 the percentage of the land ownership was Greek Cypriots (+Armenian Cypriots +Maronite) 91%. Turkish Cypriots 9%. Now the Turkish Cypriots occupy illegally 40% of the island.
Even if land in the North has been sold of, it has been done illegally, therefore, the original Greek Cypriot owners can still lay claim to their land. This is where there has been a lot of problems with people buying holiday homes in the north, only to find that now, they may not legally own the house, or the land its built on.
Yes, it would be lovely if the borders were lifted, but only for the benefit of the Greek Cypriots who once lived there.
Yes, as you said, The Turkish owned sites in the South have never been sold off…..also, you will often see houses that have a number painted roughly on them….these too belong to Turkish Cypriots, and again, these have not been touched!
I live in Xylofagou.
Yes. I think it would benefit Cyprus to start its integration process. A win-win situation.
In a perfect world that would be great. but all this started when the Greeks decided to murder the Turks town by town only 30 years ago. The Greeks are still moaning about wars from over 600 years ago. So the Turks would be crazy to give the Greeks an inch. wait another 1000 years and when the Greeks finally stop calling Istanbul Constantinople then maybe, just maybe they will be willing to see sense.
I assume you are not informed of the latest legislative developments in the north (since last year). Greek Cypriots who left property in the north can now apply the ‘Property Comission’ and ask for compensation. Some have already done so and received some compensation from our government in the north.
On the other hand, some of the Turkish Cypriot property left in the south has been destroyed, or built on, or confiscated by the GC government.
The Annan plan devised for the return of over 100,000 GC refuguess back to their property (at the cost of TCs leaving their homes and farms and businesses for the second or third time). For some reason GCs refused the plan.
What you are saying sounds ‘good’, however, you are not taking into account the fact that none of TC refugees want to return to the south and live on their former properties as ’second class minority’ citizens. Property seems to be the basic issue in the Cyprus problem, but we have to consider everyone’s concerns. What shall we do then; allow all GC refugees to return to the north we will all live packed on top of each other (since we don’t want to return to the south)? Besides, there is a loud (maybe not many in numbers but still) group of GCs who are shouting everyday “death to all Turks. Cyprus is Greek”. What are we going to do about these racists?
Well, what disturbs me the most is there are a lot of problems in the world like global warming, ozone, wars, illnesses, poverty and we are still talking about borders.
Well i think continuing like this we will find ourselves in more important problems than this.
